Teresa Duncan, PT
Teresa enjoys getting to know her patients and working with them to achieve their individual goals. She specializes in manual therapy techniques, particularly myofascial release and craniosacral therapy, but also emphasizes the importance of committing to healthy habits to facilitate quality of life improvements. The opportunity to educate patients, other professionals and the community is one of the most rewarding aspects of her work. She is both a hands-on clinician and the clinical director of Thunder Bay Therapy.
Teresa is a 1982 graduate of Alpena High School and a 1987 Alumnus of the University of Michigan-Flint School of Physical Therapy. In 1997 she opened Thunder Bay Therapy & Sports Medicine in a small storefront in downtown Alpena. She wanted a facility that provided clinically excellent, one-to-one patient care coupled with the warm atmosphere of a hometown friend. 2017 marked the 20th anniversary of Thunder Bay Therapy & Sports Medicine, now with 20 employees and two locations, Alpena and Rogers City.
Teresa's husband Bruce, Thunder Bay Therapy's Office Manager, joined the organization in 2004, They have two children, Cameron and Emily, both of whom are pursuing degrees as Physician 's Assistants. Many of their extended family lives in the Alpena Area. Teresa is active in the community, serving on the Alpena Community College Board of Trustees and the Alpena Community College Foundation Board of Trustees.
Wynne Tezak, DPT
Wynne joined our treatment team early in 2008 after receiving her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. Wynne grew up in Alpena and is a 1999 graduate of Alpena High School. She received her Bachelor's degree from Albion College. Wynne specializes in pelvic health, which includes many women's issues such as incontinence, and men's issues including pelvic pain and post surgical complications. She enjoys working with a variety of patients, particularly those with neck and back pain. Wynne uses a combination of manual techniques along with functional evaluation and exercise. Wynne chose a career at Thunder Bay Therapy & Sports Medicine because she is able to provide one on one care, creating a unique therapy program for each person.
Wynne, her husband and two sons enjoy spending time outdoors and with family.
Emily Szymanski, MS, PT
Emily joined the clinic staff in 2000 after completing her Masters Degree in Physical Therapy from Central Michigan University. She briefly moved downstate with her husband, but returned again in 2004. She grew up in Rochester Hills, MI and later married a local physicians assistant who is a native of Alpena. Emily has done extensive work with orthopedic patients and enjoys rehabilitation with athletes of all ages. Emily likes to motivate her patients to achieve all they can in therapy and enjoys seeing her patients do well and progress.
Emily likes playing and coaching volleyball and basketball. She is frequently outdoors hiking, biking, camping and gardening with her favorite companions, her husband and daughters.
Lisa Jackowiak, DPT
Lisa Jackowiak, DPT is a 2009 graduate of Oakland University with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. After graduation, she spent two years working in Ann Arbor, Michigan, which allowed her the opportunity to pursue advanced training in Certified Integrated Manual Therapy (CIMT). The course of study included academic classwork and hands on training. CIMT assesses dysfunction from a whole body perspective and helps the therapist "connect the dots" from where the driver of the pain is to where the symptoms are located. Lisa passed the certification test and now holds a CIMT in addition to her doctorate.
Lisa was born in Alpena but grew up in Chesterfield, Michigan where, she was a competitive swimmer and soccer player. She played soccer while at Adrian College where she received her Bachelor's in Exercises Science. Lisa enjoys working with orthopedic patients and especially loves manual therapy. She is also interested in expanding her knowledge in aquatic therapy.
Lisa enjoys spending time with her family. She has a sister and a brother as well as 2 nieces and a nephew. She enjoys teaching swimming lessons and coaching swimming. She is looking forward to exploring what Northern Michigan has to offer.
Arika (Berg) Kunath, DPT
Arika is a 2007 graduate of the University of Michigan-Flint with a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. Arika joined the staff at Rogers City Physical Therapy in 2011 which later became Thunder Bay Therapy Rogers City in February of 2013. Arika has done extensive training in manual therapy through Oakland University's Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy program and she enjoys treating a variety of orthopedic conditions, including neck and back pain. In 2016 Arika completed training with the Tai Chi for Health Institute. She is now a certified instructor for Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall prevention. Arika enjoys teaching tai chi classes in the Rogers City clinic and at various community events.
Arika is a Rogers City native, and she is excited to be in her home town and close to her family. Arika is active outdoors in her free time. She and her husband enjoy working in their gardens, kayaking and snowshoeing.
Cathy Thornton, DPT
Cathy is a 2008 graduate of the University of Minnesota, where she received her Doctorate of Physical Therapy. She grew up in Hancock, MI in the Upper Peninsula, and received her Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences from Michigan Tech University, where she also played varsity volleyball. She enjoys working with a wide variety of patients, utilizing manual therapy, functional exercise, and focusing on patient education.
When she is not treating patients, she enjoys photography, kayaking, waterskiing, and spending time with her husband and two children.
Andrew Doubek, DPT
Andrew joined the Thunder Bay Therapy team in 2016 after getting his doctorate of physical therapy from the University of Michigan Flint. He received his undergraduate degree from Grand Valley State University in Biology and is an alumnus of Alpena High School. His graduate school research focused on balance and falls. Andrew's special interests include geriatrics and neuromuscular conditions. In his free time Andrew enjoys participating in sports and outdoor activities and like fishing and hiking.
Kayla (Nowak) Maleport, DPT
Kayla joined our Staff in July of 2015. She is a 2014 graduate of Ohio University with a Doctorate degree in Physical Therapy. Prior to that, she obtained her Bachelor of Science degree from Lake Superior State University in Athletic Training and NATA Certified and State Licensed Athletic Trainer. She enjoys working with patients and helping with a variety of conditions. Her interests and training give her unique insight into treatment of athletes. Prior to coming to Thunder Bay Therapy, Kayla completed clinical experiences at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital working with pediatric patients who had orthopedic and athletic injuries, and The University of Michigan Sportsmed working with athletes of all ages.
Kayla grew up in Alpena and is a 2006 graduate of Alpena High School. Kayla was married in 2016. She enjoys spending time with her husband and family, hiking, biking, camping, running, coaching volleyball and spending time at the lake.
Lori Burns, PTA
Lori joined our staff in November of 2001. She is a 1999 graduate of Davenport College in Lansing. Prior to coming to Alpena she was employed at a private outpatient orthopedic practice in DeWitt, Michigan for over two years.
Lori enjoys interacting with patients and the feeling that she has helped someone. Being able to work with a variety of patients and diagnoses is what makes her job fun and fulfilling. Lori has taken Craniosacral Therapy I, shoulder, vestibular / balance and other clinical continuing education classes since joining us and enjoys using her skills to make a difference in the lives of the patients she sees.
Lori and her husband Chris enjoy their rural home, surrounded by nature. She keeps busy with her 2 children, Jacob and Allison and their Miniature American Eskimo dogs.
Ashley Haske, PTA
Ashley graduated with a A.A. degree as a Physical Therapy Assistant from the Pima Institute in Denver, Colorado. Ashley is a native of the area and a graduate of Alpena High School in 2008. She joined our staff as a PTA in April 2013 however, she previously job shadowed with us, worked as an Aide and just prior to going off to school, was our receptionist. She looks forward to impacting her patients’ lives in a positive way, making each patient know they are a priority with one on one patient care.
In the future, Ashley plans to take advantage or continuing education to advance her skills and expertise with manual and orthopedic therapy as well as expanding her knowledge in aquatic therapy.
Ashley enjoys spending time with family and friends. One of her many pass times is enjoying the four seasons and all sporting activities in Northern Michigan.
Lynsey Lyle, PTA, ATC, AT
Lynsey is a 2014 graduate of the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor where she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Athletic Training. She is a NATA BOC Certified Athletic Trainer and is a Licensed Athletic Trainer in the state of Michigan. During her training, Lynsey gained clinical experience working with the University of Michigan football, basketball, volleyball, rowing, and baseball teams. She also interned with the Athletic Training Department at Saline High School working with various high school athletes. Lynsey then attended Finlandia University and graduated in 2016 with an Associate of Applied Science Degree as a Physical Therapist Assistant.
Lynsey joined the Thunder Bay Therapy Rogers City staff in August of 2016. She is an Ocqueoc native that graduated from Onaway High School, and she is currently working with the local high schools to develop an Athletic Outreach Program.
Lynsey enjoys hiking, snowboarding, swimming, and playing guitar.
Sarah Schnell, PTA, LMT
Sarah graduated with honors in 2013 from Macomb Community College Physical Therapist Assistant program and joined the Thunder Bay Therapy staff in 2014. Prior to her training as a PTA, Sarah achieved Board Certification in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (BCTMB) in 2009 and continues to be a licensed and board certified massage therapist. In addition to her manual therapy expertise, she specializes in male and female pelvic health disorders, and enjoys providing community education to raise awareness regarding this important facet of physical therapy. She has also volunteers as a coach for Girl's on the Run Sunrise Side since 2015, instructing elementary age girls in life skill lessons centered on physical activity. She is passionate about providing individualized quality care to her patients, helping them to regain independence and return to full function. Sarah is an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association, Michigan Physical Therapy Association, and also APTA Section on Women 's Health. Family and church are very important to her, as well as being physically active and spending time exploring the woods and waters of Northern Michigan, particularly camping, hunting and kayaking.
Maria Lindahl (Kowalski), AT, ATC
Maria is a Certified and Licensed Athletic Trainer and has been with Thunder Bay Therapy since December of 1998. Her athletic training/sports medicine education and her years of experience at Thunder Bay Therapy influences her delivery of patient care.
In addition to her duties here, she is the Head Athletic Trainer at Alpena Community College where she is in charge of event coverage, injury prevention, management, and rehabilitation.
Maria has a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science with a Concentration in Athletic Training from Lake Superior State University. She is a NATABOC Certified Athletic Trainer and Licensed by the State of Michigan. She is also a certified Sportsmetrics Instructor (Cincinnati Sports Medicine) and has completed KT 1-3 of Kinesio Taping instruction.
Maria enjoys working with a variety of different diagnoses but enjoys utilizing her training with orthopedic, post-surgical, and functional rehabilitation as well as gait analysis.
Maria is a native of Alpena and enjoys spending time with her husband and their daughter as well as doing activities with her large extended family. She enjoys volunteering her time at church functions and has been on two mission trips for tornado relief. Maria is a tennis coach for Alpena High School and has also enjoyed competing herself in tournaments around Northern Michigan and at the State level. In addition she plays golf, likes to bike, go to Tiger's games and travel.
Jennifer Werth, OTR
Jennifer Werth (Timm) is a Licensed Occupational Therapist who received her Master's of Occupational Therapy in 2011 from Saginaw Valley State University. Jennifer has been working at Thunder Bay Therapy & Sports Medicine since 2012. She has been involved in community education with several presentations at the Alpena Senior Center. She likes introducing people to the benefits of her field and welcomes students and individuals interested in OT to shadow her for the day.
Her ongoing continuing education has focused on splinting workshops supporting her goal it to become a certified hand therapist. Jennifer treats all age ranges from pediatric to geriatric patients and has grown an interest in treating hand injuries. Jennifer treats any upper extremities injuries/conditions which include: shoulder, elbow, wrist & hand injuries along w/ traumatic brain injuries, strokes & cognitive impairments.
Jennifer grew up in Hubbard Lake on her family’s farm and is a 2006 graduate of Alpena High School. She now resides in Herron, MI with her husband Paul who is a local dairy farmer along with 3 small children: Parker, Paisley & Priya.
Bruce D. Duncan, MSW
Licensed Clinical Social Worker
Bruce is a 1981 graduate of Alpena High School and a 1987 graduate from the University of Michigan with a Master's degree in Social Work. Since graduation, Bruce has held a variety of counseling positions specializing with children and families. He was the program director for Hope House Girl's Residential Treatment Center for nearly 13 years until leaving the position in 2004, when he joined Thunder Bay Therapy & Sports Medicine as their Office Manager and Social Worker. Bruce wears a "multitude of hats" doing building maintenance, taking care of two therapy pools in addition to his other roles. Bruce enjoys cooking and is active in his church. Most free time is spent with his wife and children, which he considers his most important role.
Kim is a 2001 graduate of Alpena High and a 2006 graduate of Spring Arbor University with a bachelor in Science in Organizational Management. Since graduation Kim has worked at Thunder Bay Therapy & Sports Medicine. She began her career working as an aide which has been an excellent basis for learning the overall operation. In October 2013, Kim became the Administrative Assistant, carrying out a multiplicity of roles and responsibilities within the clinic which range from account management and customer care to marketing and facility management. Kim looks forward to learning more and helping the business grow and expand in the Alpena area.
Kim grew up in Long Rapids and still calls this home today with her husband, Jason and two kids Gretchen and Robert. Kim enjoys any activity with her family, if it is work or pleasure as long as she is hanging out with her family.
